Derek and Cllr Matthew Walsh

Derek Moore, a 75-year-old resident at Icknield Court care home in Princes Risborough, was proud to showcase his landscape photography to the Mayor, Cllr Matthew Walsh, on Care Home Open Day (Friday 28th June).

The national awareness day, now in its seventh year, celebrated the role of arts in care this year and encouraged homes to open their doors and show they are a part of the local community.

Derek, who has lived at Icknield Court for eight years, began his career as a print engineer and went on to work for the Mirror Group titles on Fleet Street.

As a member of Wycombe District Camera Club, Derek retrained as a professional photographer, with his own photographic studio and specialised in portrait and wedding photography. During his career he also developed a love of landscapes and took inspiration from nature in his work.

His exhibition featured alongside a showcase of children’s artwork at Icknield Court, created by pupils from the art club at St. John’s School in Lacey Green, run by local illustrator, Stewart Clough.

The celebrations also included a guitar performance from St Teresa’s School, as well as a picnic and a poetry reading in the afternoon, reflecting the diverse programme of creative activities at the care home.

Commenting on the event, Sue Faulkner, community and lifestyle manager at The Fremantle Trust, said:

It was certainly a proud day for Derek and a wonderful opportunity to showcase his incredible talent to the Mayor and members of the local community. Care Home Open Day at Icknield Court was a great way of demonstrating the value of creative expression as well as celebrating our partnerships with schools, as a care home within the heart of the local community.
