On 17 May, an atmosphere of excitement and anticipation filled the air as the residents, family members, and friends gathered. It was the grand opening of the newly refurbished Residents Recreation Room for Icknield Court. 

The occasion marked a significant milestone in creating a space where residents could gather with their loved ones and engage in meaningful visits and social interactions.

In the months leading up to the opening, the residents of Icknield Court came together for a number of meetings to discuss the use of the room, its décor and how it would promote independence. 

And the final result is truly remarkable! One end is a quiet area with a library full of books and magazines, whilst the other is a get-together area to share chats, play games and make coffees. The residents also decided they wanted to bring the ‘outside in’ with pictures of nature and living plants they could nurture.

The afternoon events included the cutting of the ribbon by residents Joy and Rob, a personal tour of the room, and a variety of coffees and hot chocolates served from the new coffee machine. Attendees were also invited to indulge in some cakes, pastries and music while they admired the new space. 

The new area has also proved to be an outstanding success for the residents. In fact, Roy said, “It’s great, I sit here every day reading my paper and doing the crossword: it has a peaceful and bright welcome.”

While Joy said, “We love it and it means even more to us as we were all included in every aspect – I chose the wallpaper and everyone loves it.”

Sue Faulkner, Lifestyle and Wellbeing Manager said: “It’s been a great project from start to finish. Promoting independence is so important, as it boosts confidence and self-esteem and gives a sense of purpose. The residents now have a place they can call their own.”
