There was no shortage of sunshine and feel-good moments at the Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity Summer Fete, and Lewin House Nursing Home was right at the heart of it.

With a classic Hook a Duck game and a hand-made papier-mâché pig stealing the show, the Lewin House stall quickly became popular at the event. But behind all the fun was a very special story that began with a simple wish from one of our residents.

Doris, who has lived at Lewin House for some time, has always had a soft spot for pigs. So when she was asked to make a wish as part of our Wishes and Dreams initiative, she didn’t hesitate:

I love pigs,” Doris said with a smile. “And I’m so glad Patch helped raise money for such a worthy cause.

And so, the team got to work. With papier-mâché, paint, and plenty of love, Patch the Pig was born—a cheerful, hand-crafted pig that quickly became the star of the fete. Visitors of all ages helped decorate Patch on the day, adding their creative flair to Doris’s dream.

It wasn’t just about making a wish come true. The whole day was about community and bringing people together to raise funds for Florence Nightingale Hospice, a cause close to many hearts. With Patch as their mascot, the Lewin House team helped raise £70 on the day.

Now back at Lewin House Nursing Home in Aylesbury, Patch sits proudly outside Doris’s room, a reminder of a wonderful day and the simple power of making a wish come true.

Katie, Lewin House Home Manager, shared:

“It was a real pleasure to support Florence Nightingale,” Katie shared. “Meeting so many wonderful people and seeing Doris’s wish come to life made the day truly special.”

At The Fremantle Trust, it’s moments like these that mean the most. Whether it’s a song, a memory, or a papier-mâché pig, we’re here to make life meaningful in every way we can.
